PRISONER JUMPS FROM NORTH EXPRESS ESCAPE AT NGARUAWAHIA Leaping from the Daylight Limited express from Wellington to Auckland as it was moving out of Ngaruawahla last evening, Herbert Handley, a prisoner under escort, made a sensational escape from custody. He is still at liberty. He was being brought to Auckland under escort op a charge of false pretences, and together with his escort was in one of the front carriages of the train, along with other passengers. ■ ‘ •- The train stopped at Ngaruawahia to cross the Limited express from Auckland, Handley still being in his seat when it pulled out of the station. The train was pulling slowly out of Ngaruawahia station when Handley sprang from his seat and jumped from the train while it was moving at about six miles an hour over the Ngaruawahia Bridge. It Is stated that he was not handcuffed. Handley is described as being of medium build, sft Bin in height, with a ruddy complexion, dark auburn hair, blue eyes and a prominent nose. He was dressed in a light brown suit, black shoes, a light-coloured hat and a light overcoat. The news of his escape was sent immediately to all police stations in the vicinity and the Hamilton police are now prosecuting a search.
