BIG RACE PROGRAMME
ELEVEN EVENTS FOR NEXT MANGERE MEETING CARS AND MOTOR-CYCLES Three cups are to be competed for at the next race meeting of the Auckland Automobile Racing Club, Ltd., at Henning’s Speedway, Mangere, which is set down for Saturday, March 8. One of these will be the New Zealand Light Car Cup, which was presented several years ago by the Auckland Automobile Association for annual competition, but has not been raced for since the Muriwai Beach meeting of 1927. There is a cup for closed cars and one for women drivers. Motor-cycles will help to provide a good day’s racing, especially if the Dominion heavy-weight champion on the grass, Percy Coleman, again comes North, as is possible. An innovation will be a motor-cycle sidecar event, which will have to be run in the opposite direction to the other races. These contests provide some of the best thrills in England, where they are extremely popular. The dust nuisance at the speedway will be abated by the spraying of several hundred tons of heavy waste oil. This will go to form a reasonably smooth, springy surface over which high speeds will be possible without danger. At a meeting of the committee of the club last evening, it was decided to ask the Auckland Aero Club to stage a display of aerial gymnastics. This had been promised for the last meeting, but was postponed on account of the Milford air crash. The programme was drawn up last evening as follows: Speedway Handicap.—B laps. This was run at the last meeting, but will be re-run between the four leading cars to decide a protest. The competitors will be Donald’s Hudson, Smith Special, Sutherland Special and Stuart Special. Pukaki Handicap.—s laps, for motorcycles. Ladies* Handicap.—2 laps, for stock machines. This carries the Dawson Cup. Motor-Cycle Sidecar Handicap.—4 laps. Mangere Handicap.—4 laps, for racing cars. Ihumatao Handicap.—s laps, for motor-cycles. Light Car Cup Handicap.—l2 laps, limited engine capacity. President’s Handicap.—s laps, for motor-cycles. Speedway Handicap.—B laps, for motor-cars. Closed Car Handicap.—2 laps, for stock machines. This carries the Butcher Cup. One Lap Handicap.—For motor-cars, open. Entries close with the secretary, Mr. T. M. V. Morton, at 4 p.m. on February
