WORKMEN COMPLAIN
CARS GO TOO FAST DANGER FROM METAL Following complaints by workmen on the road near Piopio concerning danger to themselves through the excessive speed of motors over the sections under construction, the Main Highways Board has issued a warning to the Auckland Automobile Association, asking that members be reminded that, under law, speed is limited under these conditions to 15 miles an hour. The association has decided to erect warning signs along this road, and if these are not obeyed, the board will prosecute. In past years a number of men have been injured by flying metal thrown from under the wheels of passing cars. This summer, in view of the loose surface type of maintenance now in common use, most controlling bodies suspended all but essential works until the touring season had ended. This section near To Kuiti is new construction work, and must be pushed on before winter. In order to obviate delays, certain portions of roads immediately north of Auckland have been closed to traffic to allow metalling to proceed unhindered.
