Hack Cup to Thurmis HIGH-WEIGHT TO PAGE BOY Special to THE SUN x ROTORUA, Today. THE Rotorua Racing Club’s summer carnival reached finality today in fine, sunny weather. There was another good attendance and the track was in excellent order.

Foster 3 Also started: 5 Wako King, 10.12; 4 Diamond Queen, 9.9; 6 Master Amour, 9.0. Winner trained by G. A. Tinker, Te Rapa. Won by a bead, half a length between second and third. Time, 1.45 3-5. Kairuri £ 50t3 was a pronounced favourite for the opening event, and his investments represented half of the machine total. Page Boy £284 and Mashoor £156 were next in order in the market. Wako King led out from Master Armour, Page Boy, Diamond Queen, Kairuri and Mashoor, and along the back Master Armour was on terms with Wako King, closely followed by Page Boy and Diamond Queen (together with the other pair well back). Crossing the top the favourite made a forward move, but got knocked back, and was last to turn for liome, where the order was Wako 1 King, Master Armour, Page Boy, Diamond Queen and Mashoor. Page Boy hit the front inside the distance, but was hard pressed to win by a head from Mashoor, who put in a great run. with Kairuri half a length away third. Time, 1.18 2-5. Little Toy. £649, was favourite for the Flying Stakes, with Bold Archer. £489, next in demand, and Ruapatu, £195, at. a good price. Glenison whipped round at the start and took no part in the race. Ruapatu was the first to show out, but with a furlong gone the order was Little Toy, Huahana, Bold Archer, Ruapatu and Stonehenge. Three furlongs from home Huahana. took charge and led into the straight from Bold Archer, Little Toy and Ruapatu. In the final effort the favourite attempted to get through between Bold Archer and Ruapatu, but was squeezed out, and Ruapatu won by a head from Bold Archer, with Little Toy a length back. Stonehenge and Huahana were next to arrive. OHINEMUTU HACK CUP Of £150; 1 mile 2 THURNUS (S. Paul), b g, bv Thurnham—Lady Elysian, aged, 7.6 (car. 7.12 i), G. Winner trained by J. Fletcher, Te Awamutu. Won by a head, length between second and third. Time, 1.43. Snow Prince £468 was elected first choice in the Ohinemutu Hack Cup, but backers did not get a run for their money. Just before the start the jockey dismounted, the favourite having received a kick at the post. The injury was of such a nature that the

horse returned to the paddock. Thurmis £4Ol was next best backed, while Brampton carried £272. Some Lady led past the stand attended by Rangikaha, Spring Abbey, Brampton and Unoco, but as they entered the back stretch Rangikaha took charge from Some Lady, Coll, Spring Abbey, Brampton, Always and Red Day, with Thurnus and Unoco last. Thurnus and Brampton moved up crossing the top and the latter was in front when the field swept round the final bend, his nearest attendants being Rangikara, Thurnus, Spring Abbey and Coll. Thurnus put in a strong finishing effort and got up in the last few strides' to get a head decision over Brampton, with Red Day, who finished well

a length back third. Coll and Some Lady were together, next, followed by Spring Abbey and Unoco. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP Of £240; 1 mile. 4— MAORI BOY (T. E. Davison), br h, by Lucullus—Capable, 6yrs, 9.8, L. Dulieu 1 3—LE CHOTTCAS, 8.0, H. Gray .. .1 2 I——SIR RUSSELL, 9.3, K. Gill 3 Also started: 6 Awarere, 8.13; 2 Mosaic, 7.6; 5 YVenday, 7.0. Winner trained by owner, Morningside. Won by half a heart, three-quarters of a length between second and third. Time, 1.42 3-5. Four withdrawals reduced the President’s Handicap to a bare twodividend issue, Sir Russell £550 being elected favourite. He was beaten at the finish by Maori Boy £347 (who was at a false price) and Le Choucas £367. Awarere went out to make the pace, being followed by Sir Russell, YVenday, Le Choucas, Maori Boy and Mosaic, who struck trouble going out of the straight. Awarere was still in I charge along the back, his nearest attendants being Sir Russell and Wenday, with a gap back to Mosaic and Maori Boy, and Le Choucas bringing up the rear. Maori Boy went up across the top and led into the straight from Sir Russell, Awarere and Le Choucas. At the half distance, Maori Boy looked an easy winner, but Le Choucas came with a desperate finish and got. on terms. Maori Boy responded well, however, to gain a half head decision, with the favourite three parts of a length away third. YVenday was fourth followed by Awarere and Mosaic.
