TAKAPUNA CLOSE SECOND

The contests were watched by large crowds and the Takapuna members, who, as a younger club, had less experience than the Milford representatives, gave creditable displays. The shield, presented by Mr. J. XV. "Williamson, Mayor of Takapuna, was j for life-saving and beach drill under j the same conditions as the Nelson j Shield, which is awarded for national j competition. Milford secured 161 points in this division, against Takapuna’s 1001. A feature was the generalship of Faulkner, captain of Milford, and Hilliker, Takapuna’s leader. The cup given by Mr. F. Hawes was for the march-past. Milford, by gaining 88 points, was only two * points ahead of Takapuna. Duff y. oC Maranui Surf Club, Wellington .and Mr. R. Smith were the judges; Messrs. A. C. Bacon, •A. Stewart and A. Gunn, the time- ! keepers, and Dr. T. H. Pettit, the repj resentative of the Xew Zealand Lifesaving Society. In a club conference later at Milford. at which Mr. F. R. Bailey presided, Captain Duffy stated that Milford's march-past had been practically without flaw. The appearance, the dress and the deportment of both teams had been fine. The performance, he said, was nearly equivalent, to that of Maranui, the champion team of Xew Zealand. While the average marks for the contests rarely exceeded eight, the marks in the present instance j had averaged seven and a-half. ■ Mr. P. Stewart, secretary to the Auckland branch of the Royal Lifesaving Society, advanced a suggestion for the teaching, on certain days, of life-saving among children by the surf clubs. Scientific instruction would be appreciated by parents. The teams were: Milford.—R. C. Faulkner (captain), I F. R. Marriage, C. Linden, R. Double, I T. Haywood, J. F. Bacon, F. Wells, C. I Harling. Takapuna . —F. Hilliker (captain), A. 1 Gunn, V. Douglas, R. Moor, S. V. Higgins. O. Anderson, H. E. Vaile. X. Brown. The actual division of points in the Williamson Shield contest was: Water work, Milford 93, Takapuna 91£; beach drill. Milford 68, Takapuna 59. Mr. Duffy informed The Sun that criticism of the work was due in minor details.-, which would be corrected with more experience.
