NIGHTMARCH AGAIN
COMFORTABLE VICTORY AT DUNEDIN
GLARE WINS BIG RACE Special to THE SUN DUNEDIN, Saturday. Beautiful weather was experienced for the concluding day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's Cup fixture. There was a large attendance and the course was in fine order. Speculation was well up to previous standards, the sum of £32,825 being put through the machine for the day, compared with £31.271 on the second day last year. During both days the totalisator handled £58,264, against £57,026 for the 1929 fixture. A feature of the racing was the fast times recorded, and in several instances track records were either broken or equalled. Owhiro Hurdles Despite the fact that Craigmore was making his first appearance since his inglorious display in the Grand National Hurdles at Riccarton, backers made him a good favourite for the Owhiro Hurdles, but the Saxby gelding s condition failed him after going nine furlongs, where he surrendered the lead to Red Heather. Going up the rise. Red Heather led Gayoma and Oriflamb, but once over the last hurdle Gayoma finished strongly to beat Red Heather by half a length. Oriflamb was six lengths away third, and then followed Craigmore. Gayoma showed a vast improvement on his first clay’s form, and in running the distance attached to today’s race in 2.47, the Gay Lad gelding established a track record. He jumped well throughout and finished so well as to suggest that it will not be long before he succeeds in good company. Red Heather also ran a much better race than on Thursday, but apparently Oriflamb’s increased weight helped to steady him, Kapuna pulled up in a bad way and may not race again. Warrington Handicap Topere greatly added to his reputation when he scored most convincingly from a good field of hacks in the Warrington Handicap. He hit the front soon after the start, and after leading into the straight, he left his opponents standing to win by two lengths from Ranelagh, also a winner on the opening day. Topere is a most improved galloper, and much credit is due to trainer J. Beban for the improvement he has wrought in the Arrowsmith gelding. He won today’s race like a real handicap horse, and nothing seems more certain than that he will develop into a smart middle distance galloper. Ranelagh met slight trouble at the start, but he soon worked his way into a. prominent position. At
the top of the straight he was within striking distance of Topere, but he made little impression on the winner over the last 100 yards. Almo Salar again finished strongly, third being his portion, while Miss Marco and Marsham did best of the others. Miss Marco was at a long price, but she ran a solid race and nfc.y win before very long. Jockey Club Handicap Glare scored most convincingly in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap. He was again the medium of heavy support, but in today’s race the pace was solid from the start, and of course a true fun race saw the gelding 111 his best form. Going down the back he was tailed off, but at the far turn he put in a great run on the outside, and was in striking distance of the leaders at the home bend. Once in the straight he quickly asserted his superiority, and passing the leaders in a few strides came on to beat Circulation and Amor very easily. It was an outstanding performance, and how lie lost the Dunedin Cup on Thursday is puzzling to most critics. No doubt the slow pace 111 the early stages of the Cup beat him, but he made the opposition look very moderate today. Circulation again ran a solid race, and narrowly defeated Amor for second place. Amor was responsible for the fast time recorded, but had his rider not made so much use of him in the early stages tJT- niigrllt have done better. Money Mine was always handy and his fourth at the end shows that he is returning to his best form. Flying Handicap Rin Tin Tin always had the Flying Handicap at his mercy, and eventually lie beat Meadow Lark by over three lengths. It was a striking effort, and now that the Some Boy 11. gelding is buck to form, he is bound to win anothei important sprint ere long. Meadow Lark’s effort under 9.13 was a really good performance, but at the weights Rin Tin Tin was the better horse. Silver Coot again showed a smart turn of speed, but he never looked like overtaking Rin Tin Tin or Meadow Lark in the straight. Waving Corn and Royal Saxon were botli prominent at the end. while Caterpillar ran an improved race. It may not be long before she strikes winning form. Waihola Handicap Full Fling scored a surprise win in the Waihola Handicap, and returned a double figure dividend. She led from the beginning to the end. and easily accounted for the opposition. Wig AVag a consistent galloper, ran well into second place, just beating a hot favourite in Inevitable for that position. Inevitable struck trouble during the running, and should have been second. Quin Opal was close up and ran another good race. Meitui, Audience and Stringbow did best of the others. Hopeful Handicap Compensation, Charmaine and Winsome Hind had their Champagne Stakes tussle over again in the Hopeful Handicap, but this time Charmaine gained the honours and incidentally equalled the track record for five furlongs, held jointly by Childsplay and Aspiring. The sister to Rin Tin Tin shot away to the front soon after the start, and was never headed, winning comfortably from Winsome Hind, while Compensation had to be content with third placing. Compensation did not show the dash that characterised j his Champagne Stakes effort, and he j
swerved badly under pressure in the run home. Hazlett Gold Cup Nighlniarcli, hero of the Australian spring campaign, added to his laurels when he disposed of his weight-for-age rivals in the James Hazlett Gold Cup. The brilliant son of Night Raid never left the issue in douot, and though rider Roy lteed had to niggle at him over the last furlong, the champion ran home an easy winner. He registered a very smooth performance, and revealed ample evidence that he is going to take a power of beating in weight-for-age races at the Sydney autumn carnivals. He was given a rousing reception on his return to scale, racegoers not being slow in recognising his wonderful galloping .powers.
After the race, Owner A. Louisson, when speaking to .The Sun reporter, said that he was immensely pleased at the colt’s success. He did not know definitely when Niglitmarcli was leaving for Randwick, but said that it would not be long before he went over. Mr. Louisson expects a great deal from Niglitmarcli before he retires. He says that the colt will not be seen at the height of his prowess till five years old, and few will disagree with him on this point. Paquito ran his best race since he returned from Melbourne, and his finishing run was really amazing. He came from the tail of the field, and was less than a length behind Niglitmarcli at the post. Latin Quarter was a moderate third, while Pink Note petered out after going seven furlongs. Abbotsford Handicap The meeting concluded . with the Abbotsford Handicap, which Waterline won very comfortably from Assemble and Blue Metal.
