RESCUED A COW
COCKLE BAY MAN FINED
ASSAULT CHARGE DISMISSED From Our Own Correspondent OTAHUHU, Today. For illegally releasing a cow which had been impounded at Cockle Bay on January 15 Peter Hobson was fined £1 and ordered to pay £2 14s 3d costs. A charge of assaulting Elizabeth Yardley, on the same day, was dismissed. Miss Elizabeth Yardley said her property was properly fenced and had gates. Cattle could not get on the property except through the gates. They had been put out three or four times. Later, on the day in question, two cows came in and she impounded one on her property, to await the arrival of the ranger. Hobson came and demanded the cow but was told to await the ranger’s arrival. He tried to drive the cow out, but the witness stood by it and he pushed her over, hurting her hand. He took the cow she had impounded. Albert Edward McCartney, a neighbour, gave evidence that he saw Hobson push Miss Yardley and strike her. When questioned, he denied it. Hobson in evidence said the cow got on the property through an open gate. Miss Yardley fell over when he opened the gate. She tried to attack him with a peg. Two witnesses supported his evidence.
