INVITED TO TOUR
AUSTRALIAN OFFER TO BRIDSON SWIMMING CHAMPION After a certain amount of indecision among Sydney swimming officials, Gordon Bridson, the Auckland and New Zealand men's swimming champion, is being officially invited to tour Australia by the Australian Swimming Union. is considering the offer today. Mr. H. Moore, secretary to the Auckland Swimming Centre, was advised by Mr. Baxter O’Neill, secretary to the Council of the New Zealand Swimming Association, at Christchurch, that an official invitation was forthcoming. Bridson’s tour would begin at the end of this month, in Sydney, and the duration of the tour would be from six to eight weeks. Mr. Moore immediately communicated the offer to Bridson. In Australia Bridson. who is a member of the Grammar Club, would face the swimmers who were his rivals in Auckland recently. Owen Griffiths and Noel Ryan. Bridson recently won the New Zealand championships over 100 yards, 220 yards, 440 yards, 880 yards, and one mile, with the utmost ease, and so would probably be called upon to race the former sprint champion of New Zealand, I. W. Cameron, who is now residing in Sydney. In Australia, Bridson \vould face heavy competition under strange conditions, but he would certainly put up creditable showings. Undoubtedly his splendid performances in the national contests have been responsible for the definite invitation from Australia. Bridson’s career has been marked by brilliance, and he is yet a young swimmer. At the end of the 1927-28 season the Aucklander was being called New Zealand’s greatest intermediate boy swimmer. Since then his performances have been remarkably consistent and h© has broken many records.
