KING WILLIAM

King William made a forest Beautiful and shady, He planted it with oak-trees. With beeches and with elms— And then he went a-hunting, Surrounded by his nobles, In gay, flashing tunics And many-plumed helms. Beautiful and graceful. The stately deer wandered. Peaceful and fearless. They roamed between the trees, Till William went a-hunting Surrounded by his nobles. Shot them with arrows And brought them to their knees. King W illiam was a strange man To let the deer live there, And then go a-hunting them With horses and men—- " Why did he start them Wandering in the forest' Knowing He was going To kill them all again?
