Obituary

DR. J. SPENCER-DANIELL Dr. John Spencer-Daniell. who died at his home in Garnet Road. Grey Lynn, was born at Rangiora. Canterbury, and on the outbreak of the war went and served in India and Mesopotamia with the English forces, afterward being transferred to the New Zealand Medical Corps, in which he was a captain. Toward the end of the war he was attached to the Walton-on-Thames military hospital. He practised in Auckland for about six years. Dr. Spencer-Daniell is survived, by his wife and one son, Mr. G. H. Spencer-Daniell. MRS. W. NICHOLLS Mrs. W. Nicholls, who died at her home in Avenue Road, Otahuhu, yesterday, at the age of 75, was born in Lincolnshire, England, and arrived in New Zealand when a child, living for some years at Mangonui. She married Mr. W. Nicholls, of Mangere, at the old St. Sepulchre’s Church, Symonds Street, and the first few years of their married life were spent at Waiuku, where Mr. Nicholls was engaged in sheefarming. They afterward settled in Otahuhu, where Mrs. Nicholls spent the last 40 years of her life. She had a family of 16 children, of whom nine are living. There are 23 grandchildren. CAPTAIN F. T. WILLS Prominently connected with shipping on both the Waitemata and Manukau harbours. Captain Francis Thomas Wills has died at the age of 57, after a long illness. Born on the shores of the Manukau, he soon became proficient in the handling of sailing boats, and later joined the Richardson Line of steamers, of which he was for a few years an officer. He afterward joined the Northern Steamship Company, and was master of several auxiliary schooners trading between Auckland and Tauranga, Mercury Bay and other ports on the East Coast. Captain Wills is survived by his wife and two daughters. Mrs. C. Waller and Mrs. E. Oates, and one grandchild. Four mercantile captains acted as pallbearers at the funeral. MR. C. HESKETH Formerly a prominent Auckland businessman, Mr. Charles Kesketh. died at Tauranga on Thursday at the age Born in Manchester. Mr. Hesketh was educated there and came to New Zealand with his parents in 1859. After being associated with Mr. Alfred Buckland. auctioneer, for 20 years, he went into partnership with Mr. Alexander Aitken, in a grain and produce business which he conducted for many years. He served in the first Taranaki War and also in the Waikato War, being awarded the New Zealand Medal.

A member of the Auckland City Council from 1893 to 1900. Mr. Hesketh was also a member of the Auckland Licensing Committee for a time. He was a keen sportsman and an active Freemason, being a past master of the Remuera Lodge. He had lived in Tauranga xor many years.
