BYRD IS GRATEFUL
EMPIRE’S INTEREST AND HELP PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFETY WASHINGTON, Thursday. The State Department has transmitted a message to the British Government from Rear-Admiral Byrd, thanking the Government for its offers of aid. The message runs in part: “I am eternally grateful and very thankful to have been made aware of the friendly concern of the nation to which Scott, Shackleton, Jlawson, and Evans belong, whose distinguished service always draws from ns the most friendly and profound admiration of their leadership and abilities. “We have from all sides received evidence of the cordial interest of the British Empire in our own efforts. Mere particularly. New Zealand lias front the beginning extended to the expedition the utmost hospitality and courtesy. “While we are not yet keenly apprehensive over our predicament, which is potentially quite serious, I naturally am attempting to leave undono nothing that can ensure the safety of my men.”
