POLL ON UPPER HOUSE
NARROW GOVERNMENT WIN IN NEW SOUTH WALES
LABOUR’S OPPOSITION Reed. 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. The State Legislative Assembly in committee tonight agreed to hold a referendum on May 3 for the reform of the Legislative Council. Labour members sought to have the referendum put off until the general election at the eud of the year, and thus save a considerable sum of money. The Premier, Mr. T. R. Bavin, however, is afraid that Labour would then be returned and an attempt would be made to abolish the Tipper House altogether, as was tried some years ago by Mr. Lang. In tonight’s division the voting was equal and the Government was victorious only by means of the ‘ casting vote of the chairman of committees.
