BUSY S.P.C.A.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE

INSPECTOR’S WIDE ACTIVITIES

Horses, cats, dogs, pigs, fowls, sheep, calves and goldfish . . . they all keep the inspector of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals busy. At a, meeting of the committee of the S.P.C.A., held last evening, some of the inspector’s activities were outlined. A complaint that a rooster had been kicked to death, and that another one had been kept in a tub by a Chinese, had claimed his attention. In addition, he had destroyed 51 animals, horses, dogs and cats during the month. When a pig, used for advertisement purposes, bad been left standing in the sun too long, he had cautioned the owner. He had done the same in connection with a horse too old to work, a dog kept too long on the chain, cats cruelly treated by children, and fowls and dogs left without water, goldflth kept in a bowl too small for them, and a cat found with a string cutting into its • neck. At the saleyards he had cautioned drovers for whipping calves, taking very young calves to the yards, and had also ordered several sheep and calves to be destroyed. At the racescourse he had cautioned a jockey for the use of spurs, patrolled the city markets, pounds, wharves and suburbs, and. found homes for several unwanted dogs and a Persian kitten. The chairman of the society, Mr. L. Rhodes, said it would be greatly to the advantage of the society to have more honorary inspectors, lout it was not easy to secure the right type of man. They would be glad to get assistance from responsible people who would act with discretion and tact.
