YOUTH FILLS IN CHEQUE FOR £l5O
TAKEN FROM EMPLOYER From Our Own Correspondent PUKEKOHE, Today. A youth, aged 19 years, whose name was suppressed, appeared in the Pukekohe Police Court yesterday before J.P.’s charged with the theft of a cheque form, and forging it for £l5O, and uttering it to ,a bank official. A married woman residing at Puni said the accused had been employed as a farm hand. She found him perfectly honest during the past 14 months. When writing out a cheque one day she noticed a blank butt in her cheque-book, which was usually left on the mantelpiece. Patrick Tobin gave evidence that he did not authorise anyone to sign his namie to a cheque. A. M. Rose, bank teller, said accused called at the bank after four o’clock one afternoon and presented the cheque. The signature on it, however, was not that of Tobin. Accused showed signs of intoxication. Constable C. W. Powell said accused admitted forging the cheque for £l5O, and stealing a form and presenting it to the bank. He had previously been arrested for drunkenness. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed.
