EARLY MORNING DRINK

POLICE HEARD CASH REGISTER

LICENSEE CHARGED Attracted by the ring of a -cash register, a police sergeant paid an early-morning visit to a City hotel. This morning at the Police Court Charles Chenery was fined £2 and costs for supplying liquor after hours to a person not entitled to it, and Arthur Baker was fined £1 and costs for being on licensed premises after hours. Charges of keeping open for sal.' and selling liquor after hours were made against the licensee, Albert George Neville, but on these Mr. K. K. Hunt, S.M., reserved his decision. Mr. McVeagh appeared for Neville, pleading not guilty. He admitted Chenery’s offence and Barker pleaded guilty on his own account. The offences, according to SeniorSergeant O’Grady, had been committed at 7.55 a.m. on January 21. Barker had come in for a drink after arriving by the early express. Chenery had served the liquor while the licensee was upstairs. Chenery explained that he tliought the man to be booking in* as he had just come off the train. Both he and Barker were fined. Mr. McVeagh quoted authorities in support of liis argument hat the licensee was not responsible for the action of Chenery, who was a general hand and not a barman. The magistrate reserved his decision.
