TARANAKI VISITS KING COUNTRY

BUSINESS MEN’S TOUR From Our Ou:n Correspondent TAUMARUNUI. Thursday. Confessing that the main object of the deputation was to spy out the future of the New Plymouth Harbour Board in relation to the laumarunui district, Mr. James McLeod, president of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, introduced a delegation from New Plymouth at Taumarunui yesterday. The visit is regarded, all over the Central King Country as being of great importance to the future of the two districts, and very widespread interest was shown by local bodies and representative citizens. The New Plymouth party, which consisted of Mr. McLeod, president of the local chamber, Mr. L. A. l'aish. 0.8. E., H.M. Trade Commissioner; Air. C. E. Bellringer, chairman of the New Plymouth Harbour Board: Messrs. C. H. Burgess unci J. H. Holm, members the board; Messrs. O. Pullyn, TV. Syme, W. C. Weston, Muweru, and C. H. Wynyard, member of Taranaki Chamber of Commerce; Mr. W. 13. Armitt. Commissioner of Crown Lands, Taranaki, and Mr. L. J. 3. Grant. Crown Lands Ranger. In passing through Ohura, the party thoroughly inspected the district, and in the evening were entertained at the council chambers. Mr. F. Komuyne, county chairman, presiding, and Mr. F. Langstone, M.P. lor the district, and Mr. J. McClenaghan, chairman of the Ohura Town Board, being present. At Taumarunui the visitors were the guests of the Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce, and were welcomed by Mr. A.. J. Arthur, in the absence of the president, Mr. A. S. Laird. The Mayor. Mr. C. A. Boles, extended a welcome on behalf of the citizens.

In his reply, 311'. James 31cLeod stated their main object was to spy out the land in regard to the future. The completion. of the Ohura-Slratt‘ord line would link Taumarunui and other Main Trunk towns with New -Plymouth. By road and rail Taumurunui would be in close Contact with New Plymouth, and the. town would be a clearing-house for that port. 111‘. L. A. Paish, 0.8. E.. £1.31. Bellringer, chairman of the New Plylnouth Harbour Board, their re—marks all stressing the community of interest that exists between the “'est Coast capital and the Central King Country, and 'l‘auniarunui in particular. . In the afternoon the visitors were motored to the Chateau, and in the evening were entertained at a smoke concert by the Taumarunui Chamber. Local industries, including Ellis and Burnand’s veneer works, at Mlanunui, and Winstone’s tile works at 'l‘aumarunui, were visited, and the delegation gave and received a. great deal of information that will be invaluable in the course of trade which will inevit—ably ensue after the completion of tie Taranaki line. A party of New Pl'ymouth business men, principally members of the Chamber of Commerce. who are: making a. tour of the King Country, a'Tived in To Kuiti yesterday afternoon from Taumarunui. In the evening the visitors were entertained at a social function by members of the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce. The party left New Plymouth on Tuesday, visited the newly opened coal—mine near Ohura. and then proceeded to Taumarunui. The tour will be continued to Aria on Friday, where the visitors will be the guests of the Aria. Settlers' Association.
