“NOT INTERESTED”
CHECKER TAXI COMPANY AND HIGHER FARES
THREE PARTIES CONFER An announcement made this morning. that after a consultation between the three leading taxi companies in Auckland—Checker, Chess, and Black and White—a development in the “taxi war” is threatened, and that the outcome is a proposal to stabilise fares at a higher price, is not confirmed by the Checker company. The three companies were represented at a consultation held yesterday; but, interviewed this morning, the manager of the Checker company said his firm was not a party to any suggestion or proposal, and he wished to be absolutely dissociated with the scheme. It is held bv other parties concerned that the presence of keener competition is threatening the existence of several of the organisations engaged in the taxi business. The meeting held yesterday was for the purpose of endeavouring to arrive at a working arrangement on the basis of a parity in fares, and there was a proposal to bring about an increase in fares to at least 3s for the first five miles. An attempt is also being made to obtain the agreement of the three companies mentioned to a limitation in the size of their fleets, but with the Checker company standing out from any agreement, it seems hardly likely that any definite arrangement will be arrived at.
