COMPULSORY PLEBISCITE IN NEW SOUTH WALES

POLL WILL COST £70,000

SYDNEY. Wednesday. The New South Wales Parliament opened yesterday, and has settled down to business. A Bill was introduced to provide for a referendum on May 3 at which voting will be compulsory, op the nuestioii of the reform of the Legislative Council. Voting will bo on the Bill already passed. Labour members objected to the referendum, which they said would cost £17,000, which they felt was uncalled for at a time of financial stringency. They contended that the referendum could be taken at the next general election. The debate on the secoud reading is proceeding.
