OUTER SUBURBAN TENNIS

PAPATOETOE DEFEATS PAPAKURA

The eyes of the outer suburban tennis world were turned to the Papatoetoe v. Papakura A grade match played at Papatoetoe on Saturday. Up to this round both of these teams were undefeated, and with only one rnore round to be played, interest in the clash was keen. Honours were even in the men’s singles, each-team claiming two wins. The outstanding performance of the match was the defeat of McDonald, Papakura, by Elder. This is the first occasion, through years of play, that McDonald has been defeated in his singles match in inter-club play, but on Saturday he was no match for the Papatoetoe midget, whose persistent and' accurate placing annoyed McDonald. Nicholson, Papatoetoe, also claimed his match. The Papakura representatives 'to win were Smith and Bridgman. Both of the women’s singles matches went to the credit of Papatoetoe, Miss D. Bryant . defeating Miss. Wilkins in a three-set match. Miss Meilsop accounted for Mrs. Bilkey in two straight sets. . Papakura claimed the honours in the men’s doubles by the odd 'game in three, Elder and Catt, who defeated McDonald and Bridgman, being the only Papatoetoe representatives to register a win. In the women’s doubles Papatoetoe claimed, the card, neither pair being extended. Honours were even in the combined doubles, each team winning a match. This is the first defeat suffered by Papakura since the inception of the outer suburban competition three years ago, and with only one more match, against East Tamaki, to be played, it looks odds on that the cup will find a home in Papatoetoe at the completion of the present competitions. Playing at Manurewa, Valley accounted for the home representatives by eight matches to five. The majority of the matches were very keenly contested, three set games being the order of the day, but the home team lacked the finish of the visitors. Manger© East journeyed to Clevedon and was defeated by eight matches to five. B GRADE In the B grade, Clevedon maintained premier position by defeating Mangere East by the substantial margin of ten matches to four. The match was played at Mangere East, and the final result was never in doubt.

Papatoetoe sprung a suriurise on Papakura by gaining the verdict by eight matches to six. For the two past years Papakura has been the undisputed champion of this grade, but during the present season has had to bow to defeat at the hands of both Clevedon and Papatoetoe. At Valley the home team easily accounted for Manurewa by eleven matches to three. In the Howick v. ‘ East Tamaki match the former team was victorious by eleven matches to three.
