Speed-Cycling on Road and Track
By
"CYCLOS."
A large number of cyclists were on hand last evening to compete at the races to be decided by the Manukau Amateur Cycling Cinb and the Auckland Club respectively. However, the riders were doomed to disappointment, as the necessary arrangements in regard to taking down the fence made racing too dangerous. Thus another mid-week carnival has bad to be unavoidably abandoned. The fault will be rectified next week, when the City Council w'ill be approached through the proper channels. * # * A keen committeeman and popular secretary of the club, Les Wilson, had the misfortune to meet with an accident while riding his motor-cycle last Saturday evening. There seems to be something amiss with the club when Les is not on deck, so members all join in wishing him a speedy recovery from his untimely misfortune. The executive is once more on the move with another carnival. This will take place next Wednesday evening on the Western Springs Stadium. With the riders now at the top of their form, a good evening’s entertainment should result. * * c An innovation on the above programme will be the holding of an event for secondary school boys. Some good performers should be on hand. If nominations are satisfactory further contests for this class of performer will be held.
The Dwight brothers will be opposed by Frank and Robert Casey in a special match race. All thirgs considered. this should be the event ofl the night, as there is very l.ttle between the calibre of these two set 3 of pedallers. An attempt to lower the motor-pared record made recently by Hubert Opperman. will be made by the youthful Angus Mackie. Although he has set; himself a hard task Mackie’s figures! should not be far below those of tht* Australian wizard.^ Vt the last carnival. F. Potter received a nasty fall. It is pleasing to see him in training again. Not much success has come the way of Frank on the banked circuit, and a win for him is long overdue. One has only to see A. Ritchie at his best to realise that the local professional club has a very speedy backmarker. With J. Harcourt on the same* peg. the “fronters” will have to pedal hard to keep this pair away. Ritchie’s training efforts have been something out of the ordinary. The annual meeting of the Auckland Club will be held in the Chamber of Commerce on February 25. All members are requested to attend, as a number of important matters will come up for consideration, also the prospect of another carnival to be staged on the Auckland Domain about Easter.
