ON THE GREEN
Bowls and Bowlers
f By
JACK HIGH.)
The Rotorua tournament completed this week, has had many interesting features during the course of its long history. Away back in 1903 it found its way into the annual list of fixtures, and has continued uninterrupted each successive year since that date. Undoubtedly its initiation filled a great demand with bowlers, hence its immense popularity; for annually many bowlers from all over the Bominion have taken the opportunity of combining their holiday in the centre of New Zealand’s world-famous thermal wonderland, with a real feast of the game on the green, there being no less than 11 games of the full 21 heads played in the section play, exclusive of the inter-section and final games. So popular, therefore, has the event become, that the Rotorua Bowling Club, which runs the tournament, was compelled not only to limit the entry of teams to four from one club, but to divide the tournament up into two distinct events, having a week’s intermission between each. Incidentally, to show the popularity of the event, a New Zealand bowler who was on a world tour last winter cabled his entry from Venice, so that he would be sure of inclusion. Also, it has become the practice of many teams when they are in the tournament to enter 12 months ahead, so that they might find a place in the event. During its long course, many notable players have won the concluding honours, the first being made by a Mount Eden team skipped by Harry Rankin, who again won in 1916. This remarkably fine player, the winner of many brilliant events, has since retired from the game on the green. Norrie Bell, of the Hamilton Club, has the honour of notching the greatest number of victories, having won on four occasions. The next in order is that famous old South Auckland player, Macfarlane, of the Rotorua Club, three times; M. Walker, three times; Jury, of Ponsonby, twice. Victories have also been recorded by lGllisdon heading a Rocky Nook team; Wakerley, David Dingwall, Crowley, of the Tauranga Club, twice. This line player, figuring as number three in the third win for his club. G. R. Hosking, V. Casey (who brought a New South Wales team to victory) ; TI. Clarke, A. Parker, Surman, Fakes, Ashton, and a number of others. Only on two occasions have the honours gone out of this province, and strangely enough, A. Needham, of the West End Club, headed one team from Palmerston North, and the other win was registered by Munro, the famous Island Bay skip, of Wellington.
Among the runners-up are prominent a number of famous players. J. Kilgour attained this honour, as well as figuring in several teams which won the final honours. E. J. Hill, the president of the Wellington Club, got within striking distance of a win in 1924; James Kerr, the fine Masterton player, once; also Truscott’s famous Carlton team. The late Mr. Pearson, of the Auckland Club, then of the Rotorua Club, went into the final game in 1907. John Bouskill, the veteran of the Rocky Nook Club, and past president of the Auckland Bowling Centre, headed a team that was runner-up in 1915. Norrie Kell, with Don Meredith, Varney, and R. N. I ukington, of the Hamilton Club, an exceptionally strong combination, were defeated by Treasey, Watson, Best ana Cotton, of the Tauranga Club, in 19~*2. Wright, Harkins, Casey and Parsons, of Ponsonby, were runners-up in 19-J. Harry Rankin, besides heading the team that was the first victor, got into the final game the following year. M. Walker, of the Auckland Club, headed a team that became the runners-up in 1925. Probably that season Saw this famous player at the zenith of his bowling career, for he played bowls during that tournament that were the admiration of all who were fortunate enough to witness the tussles, only being defeated in tile final game when obviously out o£ form by V. Casey’s New South Wales team. Whittle's Grey Lynn team, which was the runner-up in the recent tournament last Christmas, got within an ace of winning in 1928- W: V'ifi m<‘ a galaxy of brilliant players fighting annually in the Rotorua tournament, it can be said with accuracy that it is no wonder that the events are regarded as great tests of howling.
Apart from prominent City players, numbers of fine teams from Auckland s country clubs have been ‘’surprises in the section play. Apropos of this phase of the tournaments, an interesting story is told. A member of a city team told a fellow competitor that his combination was sure to Qualify for the inter-section play, as all they had to meet was a Taneatua quartet in the concluding game of the section play and that game ™'° U in obviously present no difficulties in winning. However, the game progressed a few heads and the optimistic player was asked how the scores were progressing. He replied that they had onlv been successful in notching three points while the opponents had scored a comfortable 13. His friend re marked that the luck was with them to score at all, as the Taneatua team was one of the surprises of tlie tournament. Thus showing that bnckbio“k teams which enter this popular event are quite equal to some ot the best of the city teams. #
This season some 55 teams have entered, which comprise some of the best combinations in the Dominion. Section A has three brilliant teams in Spooner, Long, Sheath, Russell of Remuera; Sutherland, Lindber o . Flowerday. Robertson, of Oneliunga; and Whittaker. Wnghtson, Duffin, Hosking, of Carlton. Section L has an exceptionally strong combination in Kayes, Carter, Jenkin and t\a^eiley : of Rocky Nook; also Whittle’s famous Grev Lynn team, and a good combination, including Frost. Tonkin, Lamb, Ritchie, of Carlton. Section B Is headed by Josephson, Snow. Watts. Brighting, of the Hataitai Club, Wellington, which should go far; also an excellent team under H. Clarke, of Carlton, and a famous Wellington plaver, Naylor, of the Thorndon Club, is skipping a good team. M. Walker, with a strong Auckland team, is in this section, but he is not expected to go far as he is obviously out of form this season. Possible winners of the D section are teams skipped by Jur j. of Ponsonby, Harper, of Otahuhu. with Gardiner fresh from his recent victory as number three. Branch, of Morrinsville, and Truscott, of Caiiton. Section E presents an eiiialiy strong front in teams under Hill, of Wellington Hlggott. of Whitiora. Gordon, of St. ’ John’s, Wanganui. Crowley, of Tiiur«inS3i Scantlebury, of Auckland, and Warren, of Carlton, who lias R. Millen, the champion skip of last Easter’s tournament, as number three. Certainly the tournament should be watched with more than passing interest from the initial stages to the concluding games. .
The 13th annual reunion of the Auckland Veteran Bowlers’ Association will take place on the Auckland Club’s green on Tuesday next. It is expected that the president Mr. S S_ Haszard. will welcome from 100 to 130 members to the function. Mr. A. t - Hooper, tlie well-known Takapuna bowler, is the incoming president, and will assume the supreme honour of the association on that day. The un “ doubted success of the annual funetions has been largely due to the energies of Mr. Janies Carlaw. the secretary. The function is looked forward to with the greatest keenness. when the members exhibit wonderful ability to play the game on the green despite their full years. It also provides a welcome opportunity for the members to renew old personal association and friendships as well as exchanging interesting reminiscence*
of the past. There is no doubt that Tuesday’s regathering will he the success that the 12 have been in the past.
During the progress of a game the other day, a bowler was reprimanded by his skip for not playing well. He quickly retorted in reply that he was doing his best and that no bowler ever “runs stiff” in the game on the green. He reiterated, being fairly hot under the collar, that such a thing as “running stiff” was completely unknown in the sport. Though not in such words, nor in the heat of the moment, such a reply might have been given to Mr. Westoby, secretary of the Canadian bowlers, when he credited New Zealand bowlers with packing teams opposing them. Certainly it is the policy that test teams are selected from the best in each centre, for the result of these matches have an international aspect. It would never do for any visiting team to soundly trounce our players as the result would be immediately cabled abroad and the standard of play in New Zealand would naturally be judged thereby. But when it comes to social games it is a different matter —as far as Auckland is concerned at any rate. Here, no selection was made for these games. The procedure was that the clubs were asked by the centre executive to send forward players to participate in them. As to the rating of the players no mention was even made. Those nominated were placed against the Canadians with the result already known. Unfortunately they could not be asked to “run stiff” against the Canadians, who were obviously poor exponents of the game on the "green, to enable the visitors to have victories. Such a request i 3 never made in bowling.
