GOOD MARCH-PAST
COMMENT BY LIEUT.-COL STUBBS
EFFICIENT DISPLAY
Complimenting the First Battalion, the Auckland P„egiment, on a fine march-past in the Devonport Domain yesterday, Lieutenant-Colonel G. C. Stubbs, of the Suffolk Regiment, England, told the men that it had given him the greatest pleasure to see such a display of efficiency on the part of those who were not regular soldiers. Observing that the movement had revealed great steadiness, LieutenantColonel Stubbs said such work was much easier in England, the companies being smaller. Where there were nearly 100 men in a company in New Zealand, fewer than 40 soldiers went to make up a similar unit in England. He assured the Commanding Officer, Colonel T. H. Dawson, that he would take back with him an excellent report of the work of the Auckland Regiment, which is associated with the Suffolk Regiment. The battalion gave three cheers for the visitor, who kissed his hand in farewell.
Lieutenant-Colonel Stubbs is returning to England via Auckland from service in Australia. He was invited to watch manoeuvres and drill movements of the First Battalion, which is at present in camp at Narrow Neck. He left by the Niagara in the afternoon.
Other New Zealand regiments are allied, as is Auckland, to “parent” English regiments.
