CHEQUE MANIPULATION
EMPLOYER DEFRAUDED BY TRUCK DRIVER
REMANDED FOR SENTENCE Remarking that he would be aided in his decisibu by a report from the probation officer, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.. remanded Edward Allworthy Martin for sentence when he appeared at the Police Court this morning. Martin admitted obtaining goods by means of a valueless cheque and stealing a cheque for £ll 4s from his employer. Described as a motordriver aged 27. Markin was charged with forging the name of W. J. Carbines as the endorsement to a cheque for £ll 4s and causing John Hook to act upon it as if it were genuine. The date of the alleged offence was stated to be January 5. The second count was of obtaining beer and gin valued at £1 2s from George Walker Thomas Daniels at Onehunga on November 18. Martin pleaded guilty to the second count and Chief-Detective Hammond reduced the first charge to theft. After explanations by the chief-detective and some demur on the part of accused, he pleaded guilty. Martin, added the chief-detective, had been employed by Carbines on a milk delivery round. He had received a cheque for his employer but forged the endorsement and cashed the cheque in an hotel. He hail also obtained goods from a mar. in Onehunga by means of a valueless cheque. “Martin has been drinking.” added the chief-detective. “He has been before the court for minor offences but nothing involving dishonesty. He has to appear at Onehunga in connection with maintenance proceedings.” Martin was remanded for a week for sentence in order that the probation officer could prepare a report upon him.
