tong Trip Auckland jockey E. .Manson, who did the riding for T. Lloyd at the Marton and Awapuni meetings in the New Fear, left en -route for Dunedin last evening in order to carry out a contract for the Riccarton trainer at the I>unedin meeting on Thursday and Manson will include in his rides the mounts on Hoylake and Pha&tar. One Mora to Train Ellerslie trainer J. Chisholm continues to add to his team, and the latest recruit is Norval Tea. who was formerly trained at Paeroa by 11. Eva. Xorval Tea has an abundance of speed but invariably stops quickly. When she develops more stamina her present trainer can be relied on to win races with her. Trainer Chisholm now has a useful team In hand, including Spring Abbey. Measurer. Karangajiai. Roman Pearl and a Kilbroney two-year-old. Racing Bettor • Abbess was a good performer at Matamata on Saturday, just tiring in the last bit of the Waharoa Handicap, to be beaten by Coll, and then at a shorter distance finishing with great dash to secure a close decision —and a fine dividend. Abbess can muster up a ton of speed and in big fields this is a useful asset, while she has the ability to see out six furlongs as strongly as the rest of them. She is improving all the time, and won comfortably enough on Saturday to suggest that she would not be disgraced in open sprint company at a country fixture. The connections of the daughter of Quin Abbey may hold this view. too. for on Rotorua’s opening day Abbess has engagements in both the open six and seven furlongs. I mproving •lust on three and a-quarter miles was covered by Unoco in his racing at Matamata on Saturday, and his three efforts yielded a first, fourth and second respectively. It was simple for this hardy chestnut in the opening event, the Tirau High-weight, and the price, too, came as a surprise to a lot; in fact, it was the best on the day. being under double figures. He looked a winner at the bend in the Matamata Cup. but weakened over the last furlong. His forte for consistency was again evident in the Walton Handicap, when he gave weight to all and heat everything but Grand Tea. I'noco has occasionally brought off a -take in the past for trainer C. Carmont. but his racing on his home course showed him up in a more favourable light than hitherto, and henceforth he should prove a decidedly useful proportion on the country circuit. For the Future
Theer were one or two promising two and three-year-olds seen out in the Putaruru Stakes at Matamata on Saturday, and a pair of youngsters to go a solid race was Tradesman (Raceful— Lady Birdwood), and Lapaway (Lapiday—Queen Soult). Their next engagement is at Rotorua on Saturday, and perhaps they may prove equal to showing up at the end of the babies’ race. Of the older horses who failed to fill a place in the Stakes, Val Gene, Miunga King and Valoria. who finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively, may do better with racing. The trio are three-year-olds, and Valoria, in It. J. Mateer's stable, might have made a better showing had he been close to the leaders in the early part.

Trio Off? The two-year-old Foot Rule may be allowed to forfeit her engagements at the Rotorua meeting. Chanqed Hands Owner-trainer G. Paul recently purchased the Tliurnham gelding Thurnus, who raced in his new owner’s colours in the Matamata Cup on Saturflav. Thurnus ran a good race, being fourth at the post. He is engaged at Rotorua, but is a very doubtful starter. Back in Work A. Kemp has Eager Rose back at Ellerslie, and the mare is looking nice and bright consequent on her short respite. She was deemed a big possibility in the Takapuna Cup at the end of last month, and ran a fine race in the van. too. weakening into fourth place in the last furlong. She has made great progress this season, and a continuation can be expected for she has not reached her zenith yet. Not For Rotorua All is not well with The Lover at present, and he will not carry out his contract in the Rotorua Cup. Lately he has been displaying signs of soreness. Rotorua Riders The following are some of the riding engagements announced for the Rotorua meeting, which takes place on Saturday and Monday:—J. Day; Awa.rere, Ruapatu and Thurnus (if started); K. Gill: Sir Russell and Rangitown; L. Dulieu: Mashoor: J. Conquest: Spring Abbey and Measurer; L. Manson: On Top. Lapaway and Caulis: E. Ludlow: King Win. Lusoma and Diamond Queen: A. Parsons: Tambourine, Grand Spirit and Brampton. Mounts for Wanganui Some riding engagements announced for the Wanganui meeting on Thursday are;—R. McTavish. Corinax and Bon Eve: W. H. Jones. Evening Hero, Arisus and Auctioneer; T. Webster, Shrewd. Count Palatine and Pass On; H.‘ Gray, Paganelli and In the Shade; H. Wiggins. Rose Lupin. Perennis. Goldlike. Valma. Moa Bird, Kcddar and Tenterden. An Easy Winner At Avondale in the spring of last year Grand Tea won a maiden race in easy fashion, and this, his first appearance, augured well for his racing career. He subsequently won again under Avondale trainer W. Henderson, and then transferred to J. H. Dufty’s stable was a failure on several occasions. But now the ice has been broken and after a second placing in the Matamata Cup the four-year-old romped home in t'he Walton Handicap, the last race on the programme. He was ridden a confident race by E. Ludlow, who made no mistakes on rounding the home turn. Grand Tea has the pace to secure a. position in big fields, while his stamina is unquestioned. thus it is possible he will develop into a fair middle distance proposition. It was pleasing to see trainer J. Dufty secure some success, for he has mej with adverse luck in his racing ventures for quite a time.
