SOVIET PERSECUTIONS
OFFICIAL DENIES TALES OF MARTYRDOM HATRED OF RELIGION Reed. 9.5 a.m. MOSCOW, Monday. A high official of the Soviet Government has made a statement repudiating the “incredible tales” of religious martyrdom. “Remembering the Church’s oppressive rule under the Tsar,” he said, “the Soviet does not conceal Its dislike for religion; but we fight religion by education and propaganda, and not by methods of medieval Inquisition. “Tens of thousands of churches of all denominations are functioning in the Union of Soviet Republics. Priests refraining from counter-revolutionary activities are allowed to conduct services unmolested.”
