TO SAVE SPAIN

MONARCHISTS FIGHT REPUBLICANS POLITICAL FERMENT United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright Reed. 12.20 p.m. MADRID, Monday. It was reported liere that out of the involved political situation in Spain came the somewhat startling suggestion of Count Romanones, Liberal leader and a former Prime Minister, that the country should be a Republic with King Alfonso as life President. Count Romanones, interviewed at Bordeaux, quickly dispelled the idea that he was a Republican. He said: “A constitutional Monarchy is the only form of Government to save the Spanish Monarchy, “We should immediately establish a Government on the lines of the British Government.” Earlier messages from Madrid say the Radicals, Republicans and Socialists have issued a joint manifesto advocating a Republic. They appeal to the Liberals to rally to it and prepare for the day when universal suffrage will place power in their hands. Inasmuch as this document has been signed by prominent men, especially by members of the professional and commercial classes, it may be regarded as an Important symptom of the present state of affairs'. On top of this Senor Cambo, a distinguished economist, who was expected to be the new Finance Minister, has issued a statement to the effect that the days of political parties are over. He warns the people if Parliament assembles before the present Government has cleared up the disorder left by the Dictator there will be chaos.
