SAFETY MEN BACK
DECISION OF NEWCASTLE MINERS
LABOUR’S NEW PLANKS
Reed. 10.50 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. It is understood the safety men at several Newcastle district collieries affected in last month’s disturbances, will resume work today under instructions to remain, despite any attempted picketing. The Statu Labour Party Conference has decided in favour of an immediate 44-hour week being made a plank of the Federal Labour platform.
A motion also suggested that, the State Act be amended to make it a penal offence to work more than 44 hours in one week. The conference also passed, a resolution advocating the total abolition of all forms of piecework, bonuses or payment-by-results, and urging an equal living wage for both sexes.
The Federal Government was strongly criticised by some of the delegates for its alleged lack of courage in connection with the coal troubles.
