SUCCESS IN RACE FOR DUDER CUP

DEVONPORT REGATTA The Devonport Yacht Club was unlucky in striking light and patchy winds for its annual regatta regatta on Saturday. As the afternoon went on, what wind there was fell away to almost a flat calm. As a result the courses for the small boat classes were all shortened. As it was, many of the boats did not finish until after 6 p.m. The most important race of the day, that for the Duder Cup, for A and B ciass keel yachts, went to Windward on corrected times, Mr. M. D. Gray-son at the tiller, sailing a very good race, iorangi and Nga-Toa, both consistent performers in light weather, were first and second “in.” respectively. A number of the big boats did not finish. All events were started and finished oft Devonoort Wharf. The officials were:—Starter, Mr. W. A. Wilkinson; judge, Mr. G. Miller. Details of the racing: A and B Classes.—The order of crossing the line was:—Windward, lorangi, Prize, Kotiri, Scout, Thelma, Rangi, Nga-Toa. Ariki was Bmin late. The boats then set off for the Bastion mark. The tide was ebbing weakly, and the flotilla was able to make slow progress. After 10 minutes a fitful puff came down from the north-east and the yachts were able to make better headway. Windward was first round the Bastion. leading lorangi l>y 35sec. Prize was farther away, with Thelma fourth. NgaToa had pulled up despite her late start, Kotiri, Scout, Rangi and Ariki were in that order. On the way to Duder*s Spit buoy- lorangi passed Windward and Ariki took Rangi’s position. At the Bastion for the second time the order was: lorangi, 4.47.20; Nga-Toa, 4.58.45; Thelma, 5.17.35; Windward, 5.18.5. Finishing times were: lorangi (scr), G. 17.5; Nga-Toa (scr), 6.20.35; Windward (14m), 6.28.30; Prize (7m), 6.40.6. Thelma, Ariki, Scout, Rangi and Kotiri did not finish. „ . _ Result:—Windward, 1; lorangi, 2; NgaToa, 3. H and I Classes.—At the official starting time Omatere was the only boat able to reach the line. Why Not and Starloch were several minutes late, umatere was the only boat to finish, her time being 6.47.40. M Class.—At gunfire the patikis were in a good position and crossed with Mawhiti leading out. Maratea lay next* Manene third, Maroro fourth and Manu following. The finishing’ times were:—Manu 11., 5.30.55; Manene, 5.32.50; Mawhiti, 5.33.14; Maratea, 5.37.10; Maroro, 5.52.55. Result:—Manu 11., 1; Manene, 2; Mawhiti, 3. V and S. Classes.—Namu was quickest away, with Desdemona handy. Secret was close and Ranui fourth. Rangatira was 3min late and Sceptre 7niin late. The wind was still very patchy with no weight in it. . . Finishing times were:—Ranui, Namu, 4.34.15; Desdemona, 4.37.37; Rangatira, 4.52.25; Sceptre, 4.52.30; Sunbeam, 4.53.15. The last-named was disqualified for being towed to the starting line after the race had officially started. Result.—Ranui, 1; Namu, 2; Desdemona, 3. T, X and Y Classes.—Shalimar was best at the gun of the 14-footers. Ramona was next with Lois, Rahiri, Opali, Eleanor, Fay and Resolute. _ Finishing times were: —Lois. Opah, 4.34.32; Shalimar, 4.35.8; Rahiri 11., 4.53.20; Fay, 5.3.5. Result. —Lois, 1; Opah, 2; Shalimar, o. Naval Cutters. —Three naval cutters started, but, owing to the absence of wind, only one, belonging to 1-t.M.b. Philomel, finished. Her time was 6.40.20. Seven-foot Midgets.—A race for the Tauranga class seven-footers brought out seven starters, the lads being very keen. They were sent to the Sandspit, thence round a buoy near the clubhouse, thence back to the start. The young skippers made a. close start in the following order: Imp (7m), Midget (7m), Weona (scr), Jonquil (scr), Whoopee (sm), Dawn (6m) and Wishwyn (4m). \ , .. “STAR” CHAMPIONSHIPS

RACES FOR AMERICAN CUP The series of races for the Star boat, championship was begun during the week-end. It had been hoped to get off three trials, but light winds limited the number to two, the third having to be held later. The first race was in conjunction with the Devonport Y'aoht Club regatta, the club permitting the Star event, for the Jellicoe Cup, to be part of the championship series. Mo;i was the winner by half a length. The course was from Devonport Wharf to the Bastion, back to the Spit, to Stanley Point and to Devonport Wharf. June got too close to the south shore and lost the breeze. The second race was over a course from Devonport to the Bastion, -then to the white light in the channel, and back to Devonport. Maid Marion was first off and with Moa kept to the channel, while June was running down by the Spit. Outside North Head the Maid and June worked ahead, and coming back the Maid took the lead, the finish being Maid Marion half a length ahead of June, and Moa two lengths away-. Points won are:—Maid Marion 5, Moa 4, June 3.

MANUKAU CRUISING CLUB

AOMA RETAINS TROPHY Aoma successfully defended the yacht championship of the Manukau Cruising Club from 11 challengers on Saturday. A light south-westerly breeze prevailed for the start, but later the wind freshened and went to the south. The start was a good one, the boats getting away at 3 p.m. within 14 seconds, except the last named, which was 2min 5s late. The order was: Sea Gnome, Sylvia, Champagne, Sea Horse, Wild Wave, Drone, Daphne, Nyria (all together), Shirley, Aoma (last year's winner), and Miss Mac, 2m 5s late. Times rounding the top mark were:— Drone, 3.58.3 0; Champagne, 4.0.29; Aoma, L 1.7; Sea Gnome, 4.3.51; Sylvia, 4.4.49; Nyria, 4.5.20; Daphne, 4.9.17; Wild Wave, 4.12.3 4; Miss Mac, 4.18.55. Shirley, Miss Mac and Sea Horse withdrew at this mark through minor mishaps. Drone got over on the Mangere shore out of the tide, and, still holding her lead, had trouble with her plate. She lost five minutes and the race. Champagne now took the lead, closely followed by Aoma. After rounding the bottom mark spinnakers were set. Champagne and Aoma drew away frorp the others, and commenced after a great tussle, which ended in Aoma taking the lead about 300 yards from the finishing line and crossing 23 seconds ahead of Champagne. Finishing times were:—Aoma, 4.49.28; Champagne, 43.49.51; Drone, 4.53.11; Sylvia, 4.55.25; Sea Gnome, 4.58.15; Nvria, 5.2.22; Daphne, 5.19.11; Wild Wave, 5.14. The 16ft. open championship of the Manukau was contested by- Sea Gnome, Wild Wave and Nyria. After a close race Sea Gnome again proved superior, retaining this championship for another year. The McGahan Cup for 16ft. boats and under was sailed in conjunction with the previous race, and provided an easy- win for Sea Gnome for the third year in sucEight started in the race for launches steered by women members of the club. The start was on the Mark Foy- system, in the following order:—Ramona, Grace, ! Cremorne, Tawera. Hinemoa, Regal. Elma, ! Karma. Ramona held her lead the first j time round. Cremorne passed Grace, ; while Hinemoa opened up a gap from the j boats behind her. Rounding the top : mark the first time the order was:—Ra- ,

raona, 3.42.11; Cremorne, 3.47.19; Hinemon, 3.48.39; Grace, 3.49.25: Tawera, 3.51.52; Regal. 3.52.6; Elma, 3.56.10: Karma, 3.56.22. Finishing times were:—Hinemoa (20.J,5), 4.9; Ramona (345). 4.10.4: Cremorne (275), 4.32.4: Karma (12s). 4.13.35; Regal G9s), 4.14.7: Tawera (225), 4.15.24: Elma (13s), 4.16.37: Grace (36Ss), 4.22.15. The placings were: Hinemoa, 1; Ramon, 2; CremMaster Pascoe's yacht won the race for models. The officials were:—Starter* and judge, Mr. P. Auger: assistant starter, Mr. G. M«Pike: timekeepers. Messrs. T. E. Smith and J. C. Sibbin; model yacht superintendent, Mr. L. Smith.
