BOOTS AND FISTS KNOCKED WIFE SENSELESS

GAOL FOR TWO MONTHS Assaulting his wife with boots and fists, Robert William King left her lying unconscious on the beach at Point Chevalier on Saturday afternoon. He appeared at the Police Court this morning and was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment. King, a seaman aged 34, was charged with being found drunk, using obscene language and assaulting Alice King. “I don't remember anything about it. It was a drunken argument,” replied King, in answer to the charge. He admitted being drunk. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady said ~ the blows had followed a quarrel. The man was a seaman from the Maui Pamare. Alice Amelia King was of the opinion that the quarrel had started when she had refused to go in for a swim with her husband. Her excuse had been that her arm was still bad where he had Injured it previously. King had used very bad language and witness had got up to walk away. Her husband had follow v ed and snatched her purse, taking all the money she had. He had struck her several times on the face and that was all she remembered. “I have two children by my first husband.” added Mrs. King in reply to Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. “When I came to I was in a shed and a Salvation Army woman was looking after me.” “OFTEN HAS FITS” Maria Fitness, a Salvation Army member, said she had gone to the rescue of Mrs. King after the assault. Accused had kicked the woman in the stomach as well as striking her. "She fell senseless to the ground, and I took her to my home, where I bathed her face,” added witness. Another eye-witness of the assault corroborated the evidence given, adding that he had gone for the police. “When my wife gets drunk she often has fits like that,” explained King. The Magistrate: And you try and cure her by kicking her? King was convicted and discharged on the charges of drunkenness and using obscene language. He was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for the assault.
