CAUGHT WITH THE SWAG

Constable’s Smart Arrest

MEN CHARGED WITH BURGLARY

from Our Own Correspondent. NGARUAWAHIA, Today. IN stockinged feet, Constable Carran, after watching two men in an outfitter's shop for half an hour, arrested them as they were leavirg with about JEBO worth of clothing.

On Saturday night shortly after 11 o’clock a passer-by noticed the winilow of T. D. Jackson, cycle and motor agent, broken. He gave the alarm and the owner and the police were Quickly on the scene. Examination of the premises showed that the cash register was missing, but it was empty at the time. Constable Carran, pursuing his rounds shortly afterward, noticed a flicker of light in the premises of Russell MacFarlane, mercer and outfitter. Removing his boots to minimise the noise on the gravel, the constable crossed the road and observed through a crack in the door two young men trying on suits of clothes. He realised strategy was necessary. If he tried to force the front door the men would promptly decamp by the rear door, or vice versa, and if he went for help they might leave in his absence.

After hall an hour’s wait he saw the intruders p ie their booty in a blanket and move toward the rear door. The constable surprised them as they were making their exit and managed to secure both men. Their swag contained about £SO worth of goods. A motor-car reported as missing from Auckland, was found near the building. At Ngaruawahia Police Court this morning. Frances Jeeves, 20, and Frances Pinker. 17, were charged with breaking, entering and theft. According to the police, Jeeves belongs to Auckland and is employed on the new railway bridge at Ngaruawahia. Pinker was described as a counter hand in an Auckland grocery shop. It is alleged that Jeeves spent Saturday night in the city and the pair borrowed a car belonging to Captain Ross from the corner ot Remuera Road and Green Lane. The two accused were remanded.
