MILD “HOODOO” ON STEAMER MAMILIUS NOW BERTHED AT AUCKLAND During the past few months there appears to have been a mild “hoodoo” on the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line steamer Marnilius, which arrived in Auckland from Antwerp on Saturday evening. On leaving the dock at Falmouth on December S last, in the face of boisterous weather conditions, the Marnilius collided with the motor-vessel Cape York, doing considerable damage to the latter vessel’s bow. And yet another mishap was not far distant, for on the following day, when the steamer Marie Llewellyn limped into the Falmouth harbour with its fore topmast carried away in a storm, one hatch stove in, tarpaulins lost, and steering gear damaged, she was struck by the Marnilius and holed badly on the the starboard side. The Marnilius eventually left Falmouth and loaded a cargo of basic slag at Antwerp for Auckland without further incident. But nearing this port, one of its crew was taken seriously ill and it was found necessary to wireless Auckland to have an ambulance ready at the wharf on the vessel’s arrival. The patient was taken to the hospital and is reported to be progressing favourably.
