King’s Guard Takes the Matamata Cup

Grand Tea s Consistency

Superior staying powers won for King’s Guard a comfortable victory in the Matamata Hack Cup Handicap, and for a favourite his supporters received a good return. Grand Tea, who filled the role of runner-up, made amends in the la . st e Y ent on Programme, and his win was achieved in easy fashion.

ITot sultry weather prevailed for the annual meeting of the Matamata Racing Club on Saturday, and with a large and representative attendance at the commencement of the racing, prospects looked exceedingly bright for a prosperous meeting, but speculation was not as brisk as expected, and the turnover of £18,249 on the day, compared with £19,744 10s last year, showed a decrease of £1,495 10s. The course was in the best of order. It was a bad day for the favourites. Grand Tea and King’s Guard being the only public fancies to score, while on the other hand second choices had three winners in Valcuir. Valreina (both from R. Martin’s stable), and Red Day. TJnoco met a very ordinary lot in the opening event, and notched a clearcut win to give a nice return, while Abbess’s price on her second appearance was surprising. The race for the Cup proved an interesting affair, but in the concluding stages the Cambridge representative. King’s Guard, smothered the opposition. and further embellished his fine record. The win was popular with sportsmen, Mr. R. Hannon receiving the silver cup attached to the stake, amid applause. The meeting was excellently managed, the secretary, Mr. T. J. Underwood, and his executive having the arrangements well in hand. Details of the racing, with results, were as follow: Tirau High-weight Page Boy £GO9 was a better favourite than Otranto £293 in the Tirau High-Weight, and the former was a bit unlucky, meeting with interference and being wide out most of the way. The winner and second horse, Unoco £137 and Always £ 144 were at fine quotations. Otranto led out of the straight from Lucess, Grand Arch and Foxhound, and entering the back stretch the field commenced to string out. Otranto there still held command, from St. Warrigal, Foxhound, Grand Arch, Lucess, Page Boy and Unoco. As they started to file across the top Unoco made a forward move, and at the home turn he was almost on terms with Otranto and Lucess, with Grand Arch and Page Boy following. Once in line Unoco drew out and gave nothing a chance, finally winning by two lengths from Always, who finished strongly a length and a half in advance of Grand Arch. Otranto was fourth, and iMaster Armour, Page Boy and Lucess followed.

Hinuera Handicap A big field of 16 lined up for the second event, and in a fair pool there was most support for Welcome Boy £455 and Valcuir £387, with Caulis £272 also in mild demand. The favourite had every chance but failed to run on the straight. The field raced in line for a furlong and a half, with Dainty Manners and Welcome Boy prominent, and a little farther on the order of the leaders was Welcome Boy, Ruby Dawn, Kanui. Day Guide, Dainty Manners, Miss Albyn and Valcuir. Welcome Boy led into the straight from Ruby Dawn, Day Guide, Valcuir (coming fast), Dainty Manners and Caulis (coming fast). Over the last bit Valcuir wore the leaders down and won by half a length from Caulis, with the big outsider Wild Mint a neck away, just in front of Welcome Boy. Next were Dainty Manners, Temperature and Hinauta. Waharoa Handicap There were only seven runners in the Waliaroa Handicap, and there was most money for Parfait Amour £564 and Archileen £387. However, there was a mild surprise in store, for both dividend payers, Coll £2BB and Abbess £2OB, were at line prices. A great start saw Liona, Flapperette and Parfait Amour early prominent. The field raced in close order along the back, Liona, Flapperette and Parfait Amour still being conspicuous from Coil, Abbess, Archileen and Oscar. The last-named got badly interfered with and nearly fell. Flapperette led Abbess, Liona, Parfait Amour, Archileen and Coll as they started to cross the top. Abbess was the first to turn for home, attended by Parfait Amour, Flapperette, Archileen and Coll. At the half-distance it looked as if Abbess would prevail, but she weakened and Coll, putting in a determined effort, lie got up to beat Abbess by half a length. Parfait Amour was a short neck behind Abbess, and then came Flapperette, Archileen, Oscar and Liona. Matamata Cup Handicap

The defection of Luminary, Tuku, Spring Abbey and Red Day left a field of eleven to contest the Matamata Cup, which was an interesting contest throughout. King’s Guard £615 was at a good price, thanks to the support accorded Motere £589, with Unoco (penalised 31b) third choice with £334. Grand Tea was sixth fancy, carrying £lB9. Whakama and The Sun led past the stands from Always and Unoco, but The Sun led round the bend going out of the straight from Whakama. Grand Tea, Unoco, Star Comet, Day Lass and King's Guard. Passing the five rurlongs a great change had been undergone, the leaders being passed, and Unoco was making play from Day Lass, Taumai, King’s Guard, Grand Tea, Whakama and Motere. Unoco was still in command round the turn for home, Day Lass;, Taumai, King’s Guard, Grand Tea and Motere following. Once straightened up King’s Guard joined issue and he finally went on to win comfortably by a length from Grand Tea, with Always, at long odds, a neck back in third berth. Unoco was fourth, and Motere was going great guns in fifth place. Then followed Day Lass, Star Comet, The Sun and Whakama. The winner did his part as well as expected, for he was not rehandicapped as a result of his win at Takapuna the second day. Pataruru Handicap Glenison was all the rage in the Putururu Stakes, and carrying £732 he was a,t solid odds on. Valreina £2lB was at a great price for second choice, and Rita’s Light £lB4 was ; next in request. Half the field was left when the barrier rose, Valreina leading out from Tradesman, Rosebank ! and King Win. Valstreet had a slight call over the favourite as they swung round the home turn, attending them being Tradesman, R.osebank and King Win. Although Glenison challenged hotly over the last 100 yards, Valreina held him oft" to win by a neck. The two-year-old Tradesman (Raceful— Lady Birdwood) was a length away in third berth, and then came Lapaway, \ algene, Maunga King and Valoria. Okoroire Handicap

There were only half a dozen runners in the Okoroire Handicap, and Crown Arch £522, Red Day £491 and Oscar £4Ol were the prime fancies. Crown Arch led out from Red Day, The Sun, Oscar, Lucess and Nulli Secundlus. Along the back the order was the same, and it was maintained a little farther. Red Day led across the top and into the straight from Crown Arch, Oscar, Nulli Secundus, Lucess

and The Sun, and the first-mentioned was not troubled, to win by a couple of lengths from Oscar, with Crown. Arch a length and a-half back third. Lucess was fourth and Nulli Secundus and The Sun followed. Railway Hack Handicap The scratching pen was freely used in the Railway Hack, a dozen out of the original 20 acceptors going to the post. Archieval £Bl4, wound up a warm favourite, there being a pronounced drop to the second choice. Master Latour £339, and Vital £306. The eventual dividend payers were Abbess £217 and White Ringlet £271. White Ringlet began smartest, being followed out by Foreign Fancy and Master Latour. Master Latour had run clear very quickly, with White Ringlet, Glenison, Wako King, Archieval, Vital, Rangikaha and Ruby Da.\vn. As they approached the straight Master Latour still had a clear advantage over White Ringlet, with Glenison, Ruby Dawn and Archieval next in order-. White Ringlet drew up to the leader in the straight, but Abbess finished too strongly for them and she won by a head, paying a line price. White Ringlet was a neck m front of Master Latour, and then came Glenison, Joy Girl, Archieval, Wako King and Vital. Walton Handicap Half the field failed to parade fpr the Walton Handicap, nine runners lacing the starter. Grand Tea's form in the Cup encouraged backers to make him a staunch favourite with £663, a good call over the second and third fancies, Parfait Amour (£512) and Patere (£484) respectively. Parfait Amour and Grand Tea were smartest out, but Patere soon ran to the front and led into the back from Grand Tea, Otranto, Parfait Amour. Hie Jack Jumper and Komak. With live furlongs to go, Otranto assumed command, and at the half Grand Tea was right up next, with Patere, Parfait Amour, Komak, The Jack Jumper and Unoco following. There was nothing between Otranto and Grand Tea at the home bend, with Patere right up, and Komak, Parfait Amour and Unoco racing in line; but once under pressure Grand Tea finished splendidly to secure a two and a-half lengths’ decision over Unoco, who came fast in the concluding stages of this, his third race on the day. A neck away in third place was Patere, followed home by Otranto, Komak and The Jack Jumper. TIRAU HIGH-WEIGHT HACK HANDICAP Of £100; Si furlongs
