WOOL UP SLIGHTLY
SOUTH CANTERBURY SALE Id ABOVE DUNEDIN PRICES Press Association TIM ABU, Friday. The second South Canterbury wool sale of the season was held this afternoon, when 14,439 bales were offered, compared with 22,470 bales at the corresponding sale last year. The decrease in the offering may bo attributed to wet weather delaying shearing and to some growers holding wool ip the meantime in consequence of the state of tlie market. Generally speaking, tlie offering was not up to tlie usual standard, the unseasonable weather resulting in a big proportion of the wool being tender. Super lots were really few and far between. There was a full bench of buyers, who bid spiritedly, but did not appear prepared to exceed the limits. Compared with the Dunedin sale on Wednesday prices for Merino were a penny dearer, halfbreds were a halfpenny to three-farthings higher and three-quarter and crossbreds a halfpenny higher. Piece wools elicited keen competition from Continental buyers and were about a penny higher. Fully 80 per cent, of the wool was sold at auction. The bulk went to the Continent, but Bradford and Dominion mills competed keenly for suitable lots. The following is the range of prices:— Merino.—Extra super, up to 14d; super, Hid to 13d; average, lj)d to Hd; inferior, 8d to 92d. Halfbred.—Super, 12d‘to 131 d; average, lOd to lid; inferior, 72d to 9£d. Three-quarterbred.—Super, 9d. to lid; average, 7Ad to B£d; inferior, 6d to 7d.
