KEEN FIGHT EXPECTED
BIRKENHEAD BY-ELECTION
TAXI-BUS CONTROVERSY
Nominations for the two vacant seats on the Birkenhead Borough Council, caused by the resignation of Messrs. Spiers and Moller, closed today. The following were nominated: Messrs. R. M. Beswiek, W. H. Chayne, F. Morris and G. Pugh.
An election will be held on February IS. Great interest will be shown in the election, as it appears that it will be fought on the question of whether a bus licence should be issued to Mr. Donohue, a taxi-driver, who formerly held a bus licence. On three occasions the council has decided against granting the “licence. The voting was five to three. Those in favour of the licence being renewed are working hard to get their candidates at the top of the poll so as to even the voting, and as the Mayor is one of the taxi-licence supporters, in all probability his casting vote would be given in their favour.
Those against the licence being renewed have also two candidates in the field, and a very keen and lively contest is anticipated.
