CIVIC

NEW PROGRAMME TOMORROW

The splendid programme which has been the attraction at the Civic Theatre during the past few days will have its final presentation there this evening. It includes musical selections by Fred Scholl at the organ, and Ted Henkel and his Civic Orchestra, dancing, and the dramatic talkie, “The Trespasser,” which introduces Gloria Swanson as the screen’s most outstanding talking and singing star. From tomorrow, an entirely new programme will be presented, of which the chief feature will be the film, “Charming Sinners.” This is a Somerset Maugham story, with Ruth Chatterton and Clive Brook as the stars. In the story, Kathryn Miles knows her husband, a wealthy doctor, is having an affair with her best friend, Anne Marie Whitley. Miles and Anne Marie strive to hide their feelings, although the town is talking of the affair. Into this delicate situation comes Carl Kraley, who, after 10 years in Japan, still loves Kathryn. Kathryn decides to use him to discipline her husband. The affair comes to a climax when Whitley becomes suspicious of his wife. Kathryn saves the guilty pair by lying. Miles and Anne Marie are forced to admit their indiscretion to her. Miles, expecting an angry tirade from his wife, is astounded when she takes it in a matter-of-fact way. The next day Kathryn wins £3,000 at the races. This gives her the opportunity she sought. She tells Miles she is leaving for a vacation in Italy with Karl. Miles’s fury is vain, and in the end he tells her that he loves her so much he will take her back when she returns. Karl learns of her story to Miles, and is eager to accompany her. Kathryn, however, although willing to punish her husband, has no intention of betraying him. She tells Karl that she is going to return to her husband after a solo trip to Italy, and she bids her persistent lover a final farewell. The new programme will also include new musieal selections on the Civic grand organ, and by Ted Henkel’s symphony orchestra and stage band.
