NEW PRESIDENT SHOT
YOUTH LEADS MEXICAN POLITICAL PLOT
JAW WOUND INFLICTED MEXICO CITY, Thursday. The assailant who shot the new President of Mexico, Senor Paxual Ortiz Rubio, in the jaw yesterday, was arrested. He is a youth named Miguel Flores, a partisan of Senor Vasconcellos, who was defeated by Senor Rubio for the Presidency. The arrested youth was. clothed in black. He wore Roman Catholic insignia to escape detection. He stubbornly refused to talk. He has been placed under a heavy guard. Accomplices of the would-be assassin, one of whom was a woman, escaped on the cycle of the policeman who had caught the youth. An indescribable impression of regret is visible everywhere among the citizens, who earlier in the day were in the best of spirits over the peaceful and orderly manner in which Senor Rubio had assumed office.
Representatives of all the political factions have expressed their disgust at the cold-blooded attempt to murder the President. In his inauguration address, Senor Rubio pledged the Government to five years' hard work for the common people. He said the workers and peasants were the hope of Mexico. The restoration of a Conservative regime, or even one of moderate men and systems, was impossible because tlie country, heart and soul, was intent of the radical work of restoring to the race its heritage. The Government would be “entirely revolutionary." WIDESPREAD PLOT The Mexican authorities believe the attempt on the life of the President was part of a widespread plot. Acting on orders from the Department of the Interior, seven more people have been arrested. Their identity has not been revealed. It is authoritatively reported that the assailant admitted to the Secreary for War, Senor Amare, that he is Miguel Flores, aged 22, a student, and a follower of Senor Vasconcellos. The youth alleged, that the adherents of the latter had hatched a plot to kill Senor Rubio and all the members of his Cabinet, also the exPresident, Senor Portes Gil. The conspirators had intended to produce political chaos, and seize control of the Government. The police are watching closely for further trouble, the exact seriousness of which they cannot yet ascertain.
