LABOUR’S AIMS
MOVE TO REDUCE HANDLING COSTS
MIDDLEMEN ATTACKED Reed. 9.40 a.m. CANBERRA, Today. Great importance is attached to marketing negotiations now proceeding in London between Mr. J. E. Fenton, Australian Minister of Customs, and Mr. Philip Snowden, Chancellor of the British Exchequer. The basis of the plan is Government control. The fact that Labour Governments are now in power in England and Australia is regarded as a line opportunity to apply some of the doctrines of the Labour movement for the public control of marketing. The aim is to ensure higher prices for the Australian producer and lower prices for the British consumers by reducing the number of middlemen and to effect a substantial decrease in handling costs. It is proposed that the British Government should establish wholesale and retail agencies to dispose of Dominion produce,— meat, fruit, butter and cheese.
