DEVONPORT BUILDING

KEEPING STREET FRONTAGES NEAT

COUNCIL MEETING HELD r T rx® P e Puty-Mayor of Devonport, Mr. J. Hislop, presided over the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, the Mayor being absent in the South Island. Devonport will be represented at the annual conference of the Municipal Association by the Mayor and town clerk. The latter will also attend the conference of town clerks. A Dominion conference of borough engineers is to be held at the sanife time, and the borough engineer may have leave if he wishes to attend. Twenty-two building permits were issued, but in pursuance of its policy of keeping street frontages neat, the council is insisting on the builders of motor garages keeping their buildings back from the street line.

The borough is to review the position of the engineer. The council in committee reported having fully discussed the question in conjunction with a suggestion that the work could be done on a consulting basis. The clerk is to obtain information from others as to their methods of carrying out engineering work, and report to next committee meeting. The deputy-mayor reported that rates struck for the year amounted to £39,566 (£530 less than last year). Of this sum £21,962 had been paid by the end of the 5 per cent, rebate period, and to the end of January, when the 10 per cent, penalty became operative, £34,771 had been paid at the office. This was about £9OO less than last year. A request from the Auckland Licensed Drainers’ Association, that Devonport should forgo the collecting of annual fee of £1 from drainers’ licensed in other places, was held over for the consideration of the Municipal Association. It was held that this was a case in which one body could collect the fees and distribute them among the several local bodies. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs. R. L. Cleland, president aof the Devonport Navy League, was recorded.
