JOE GEE’S BAD LUCK
PROMISING FILLY HURT AT TE AROHA KEWPIE’S GUY WILL KEEP Kewpie’s Guy, the three-year-old daughter of Blue Mountain King, from that good mare Kewpie, who was foaled on Guy Fawkes Day (hence her cognomen) was one of the promising youngsters of the season at Epsom. Under the careful and able supervision of Joe Gee, the filly was not unduly bustled in her education, and when first asked to face a race crowd at Hamilton in October, she made a creditable showing. Although not as far advanced or nearly as well seasoned as several of the Derby candidates, Kewpie’s Guy was given a run in the Auckland classic, arid while she had no chance with the placed division, the filly was not disgraced. Since Christmas the Grey Lynn trainer had the three-year-old doing nicely, and it was generally anticipated that she would achieve distinction in one of the novice events at Te Aroha. But the fates decreed otherwise, as after reaching Te Aroha, the well-mannered filly received a nasty kick from another horse, which put her out of action for the meeting. Filly Will Do Well
This was indeed bad luck for her sporting owrter, R. Troughton, and genial trainer J. Gee, as judging from the displays given by .the novices last Saturday, young Kewpie would have picked up some of the prize money. For the sake of her connections, who keep smiling in the face of misfortune, it is to be hoped that the injury will not keep Kewpie’s Guy long off the scene, and all going well she should get on the winning list before the country circuit closes.
However, the perpetual smiling Joseph was not altogether neglected by the goddess of fortune at the meeting. as after driving his old favourite Anseline into second place among the pacers, and paying a fine price, he succeeded in getting Childe Audubon to make a dead-heat of the ITot Springs Handicap with the favourite, Mountain Princess. When he returned to the enclosure there were cries of “good old Joe,” and the smile broadened considerably
