A special meeting of the Taumarunui Borough Council considered the question of rating on farm lands within tho town area, in connection with a movement set on foot by the Feilding biprough, through the Municipal Association. A special schedule was presented by the town clerk, Mr. I. A. Webb, showing tho various rateable areas in the borough, and after consideration the council resolved that the present system of rating did not require altering, and that the action of the Municipal Association in opposing the proposed Urban Farm Lands Bill be endorsed. From figures supplied by the clerk, the present rateable value of the Taumarunui borough is £246.602. * # * The Taumarunui County Council has just concluded a comprehensive tour of the county, lasting three days. The touz- was undertaken with the object of inspecting county works, and especially the roads in the various ridings. The party consisted of the chairman, Mr. G. A. Stanton, Crs. 1-1. R. Street, 1\ R. Skelton, A. Saddler W. Spicer, M. J. Dynan, and Mr. S h’ Andrew, county clerk, and P. Joyce, county foreman. w ♦ * The Manunui Town Board has been advised by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, that a favourable report had been received on the electrical reticulation of the town district, and the work was therefore passed for use. Mr. A. B. Card, postmaster at Taumarunui, supplies the following statis.tics for the month of January:—Births, 10: deaths, 5; marriages, 3. The total rainfall for the month was 7.05 inches, as compared with 1.99 inches for January, 1929. Fine weather saw cricketers out in force under the Taumarunui Association’s banner on Saturday. Rangaroa defeated East by five wickets and 114 runs. For the winner, R. Winger retired after trundling up 114 runs. Christmas (23) was the most prominent batsman for East. Playing at Manunui, the home team defeated City by 6S runs. Schmidt was die main support of the winner, and Morgan showed up best for City. Arrangements are being made by the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce for a tour through the King Country with Taumarunui as the centre. The party will leave New Plymouth on February 12. returning on February 15. Transit will be by motor-car. and a very large area of country will be inspected, as well as the most prominent coal mines. The chamber is endeavouring to secure members of the Harbour Board, especially the chairman, as members of the touring party.
