FRICTION OVERCOME
SUBURBAN CRICKET DISPUTE REGRADING OF PLAYER An unfortunate element of friction existing between certain officials of the Suburban Cricket Association was removed last evening at a largely attended special general meeting of delegates called to consider the resignation of the association secretary, Mr. E. Stallworthy. Mr. J. Elliott, president of the association, occupied the chair. The debate was taken in committee, and a statement later communicated to the Press. The resignation, it is stated, was the culmination of a dispute between the secretary and the chairman of the junior management committee, Mr. J. P. W. Dickson, and arose over the regrading of a player. After letters from the Empires’ Association, eulogising the work of the senior officials, and urging the association to persuade Mr. Stallworthy to continue in office, were read, the subject was discussed, and the officer withdrew his resignation. The trouble arose through the regrading of a player who was in the senior ranks when Glen Eden had a team in the competition last season. There being no Glen Eden senior team this season, a request that the player should be allowed to play for the club’s third grade eleven, to help coach the boys, met with the official’s approval, but the latter was subsequently taken to task. The misconstruing of a ruling given by the president on a similar point some years ago was responsible for the dispute in this case.
