In the Market Place

APPLES CHEAP FAIR FRUIT CLEARANCES Apples are selling cheaply in the city markets, principally because of the heavy supplies. Other fruits, such as peaches, plums and pears, are plentifully stocked. Peaches, in particular, are coming forward in large numbers and tomatoes are also in heavy supply. Californian oranges are maintaining their extremely high rates. Bananas showed no important change under a firm inquiry today. Lemons are dear. Nectarines are bringing fair prices, but tho quality varies. In the vegetable market, low' prices continue to rule for new* potatoes and onions, which are heavily stocked. Cabbages, lettuces and beans are also offering in sufficient quantities. Other lines are in good demand. Quotations: FRUIT Plums. —Satsumas, 2s to 3s; English plums, 2s 6d to 4s; Sultans, 2s 6d to 4s; Burbanks, Is 3d to 2s Gd. ONIONS FOR VANCOUVER CANTERBURY SHIPMENT Onion growers in Canterbury will be glad to learn that an overseas market for onions was opened up this week, 200 tons having been sold by a Christchurch merchant to Vancouver, states tho “Press” of Saturday. The sale of a big lot of onions to Montreal is at present being negotiated by the same merchant. Last season a small shipment of Canterbury onions went to Vancouver and gave every satisfaction. 11l the past the export business in onions has been done chiefly from Auckland, but it seems likely that in future Canterbury will get a share of this business. WELLINGTON HIDE SALE KEEN COMPETITION All the Wellington brokers were represented at the fortnightly sale of sheepskins, hides and tallow on Friday, when good catalogues of all grades were offered. Inquiry for all grades of sheepskins was irregular, and values, in sympathy with the London market, receded Id to lgd a lb on previous quotations. Shabby, inferior and seedy lots at times were 2d lower. Salted skins were easier, in sympathy with drys. The hides catalogue comprised good consignments of butchers’ hides, and these commanded keen competition. Ileavies were fully on a par with late rates, medium-weights par to l-8d lower, while light-weights were f-Sd to Kip, yearling and calf were in demand, and sold well up to the level of values at last sale. Competition tor tallow was good for well-rendered lines, prices showing no alteration on late rates.
