AMID HEAVY ICE
BYRD PARTY REVIEWS LEAVING PROSPECTS By RUSSELL, OWEN Copyrighted, 1928, by the “New York Times” company and the St. Louis “PostDispatch.” All rights for publication reserved throughout the world. Wireless to the “New York Times.” BAY OF WHALES, Saturday. The weather is gloomy, with a strong, cold wind from the south, hinting at winter. Yesterday we had the heaviest snowfall for a long time. There are no more indications that the ice was going than a month ago. Wo cannot help comparing the conditions with those in the years Amundsen came to the Antarctic. His ship got through the pack in five days. The* ice went out the first year on January 13, and the second time between the 19th and 30tli. Heavy ice may come in cycles. Perhaps we are in the middle of a bad pack.
