Civic Snapshots Notes from the Council Chamber
An offer of 150 acres of Mangere land at £IOO an acre was received by the City Council last evening from Samuel Vaile and Sons, Limited, who stated that the site was ideal for aviation purposes. The offer-was declined. * * * A donation of £lO 10s was made to the funds of the Auckland Anniversary Regatta, 1930. & * * A communication from the Undersecretary of the Department of Internal Affairs submitted a report of the commission which sat to consider proposed alterations to the boundaries of the Mount Roskill Board District by excluding a certain area. The report, which .recommended that the alteration be not made, was received. * »s» “Thank you for the usual courtesy,” remarked Cr. J. R. Lundon. The councillors had voted against a continuation of his speaking time during a discussion on the appointment of the City Engineer. * * * “I now propose to move another amendment,” announced Cr. Lundon. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, regarding the clock: You’ll be a bit late if you don’t hurry. Seal of the Ballot “Are you quite clear on the procedure of this ballot?” asked the Mayor on the voting on the City Engineer’s position. Cr. Lundon: Ah! The seal of our ballot lies in our hand-writing. • * * “Is anybody going to be in London on June 21?” asked the Mayor, reading an invitation extended by the Royal Sanitary Institute to delegates of the council to attend the next congress of the institute which was to be held at Margate from June 21 to June 28, 1930. There was a silence that did not mean consent and the invitation was received. * * * Getting It Clear Instructions were issued by the Mayor that, in the ballot eliminating three of the remaining six applicants for the position of City Engineer, three of the six names should be struck out. A Councillor: I want to be quite clear about this. Does it mean that we leave three names on? m Si * Leave For Conferences Facilities were given the Town Clerk and the City Engineer to attend conferences. the engineer to the Municipal Engineers’ Conference on March 5, and the clerk to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Town Clerks on March 4, both to be held at Invercargill. For the reason that all the dates were occupied, the Auckland Businessmen’s Relief Service was refused permission to hold a street collection in 1930. The balance-sheet of the service for the period ending November 30, 1929, was enclosed with the request * * * “I would be frightened to trust heavy traffic, with passengers, over the temporary bridges on the Waterfront Roadway,” said the Mayor, referring to the council’s protest to the Transport Board against the issue of a temporary licence for passenger transport along the route.
