RACE AGAINST WEATHER
WILKINS POLAR PARTY TAKE RISKS FLIGHTS IN FROZEN SOUTH LONDON, Tuesday. A copyright message from Sir Hubert Wilkins at Deception Island, dated January 27, says: “We will make two or three more exploration flights it we are successful in the rapid approach of unfavourable weather.” The ship William Scoresby, with the Lockhead monoplane on floats, is to leave here today for a point: westward of Peter Island. That will be our hopping-off point for the flights. The trip will last about three weeks. We hope’to reach new land far to the south. If we locate ice suitable for ! skis we will equip the plane with them and fly over the Ross Sea. All our plans depend upon the weather. Desperate attempts in the face of the weather at this late season are not warranted. To rescue us would be difficult if an accident happened.
