TAXI-CAR BUSES

REJECTED AT BIRKENHEAD For the third time, the taxi question was again prominent at the Birkenhead Borough Council meeting last evening. A deputation, headed by Mr. J. Canty, president of the Ratepayers’ Association, presented a petition signed by 260 residents requesting that the licence of the motor-car omnibus operated by Mr. L. Donohoe for some time past should be renewed. He claimed that the car was of great service to a large number of passengers in various parts of the district. Mr. Canty said that the Blue Star service was inadequate to cope with the passengers, and overcrowding resulted. Beach Haven residents, particularly, were being affected by the car not running. Mr. R. Beswick said that residents viewed the action of the council as arbitrary, and that the discontinuance of the motor-car service was inimical to the welfare of the district. He believed that 90 per cent, of the residents would .sign the petition if asked. Cr. J. Kerruish proposed, and Cr. W. B. Darlow seconded, that the request of the petitioners should be acceded to, and Mr. Donohoe's licence be renewed. This was supported by the Mayor, Mr. J. P. McPhail. The motion was rejected, those voting against being Crs. Campbell, Hewson, Alexander. Jasper and Hayman.
