Crack Juveniles Meet Next Week

DERBY WINNERS ABSENT ROYAL SILK WILL IMPROVE After the stirring contests witnessed this season in both the New Zealand and Greath Northern Derbies, the New Zealand Metropolitan Club was ambitious enough to endeavour to get the cream of the youngsters together again for another battle. The management considered a 3.31 limit to fill the bill admirably as the basis of a handicap, and while it met with general approval, the event set down for February 8, known as the Champion Three-year-old Handicap, did not draw an entry that would encourage the club in promoting such an interesting item another year. (The most notable absentees are Purser (New Zealand Derby winner) and Great Parrish (victor over the G.N. Derby field). The former went all to pieces when last in Auckland, and Great Parrish, who has been on the active list since a yearling, was given a good holiday after his classic success. But Royal Silk, and Ngingo Ngingo, who broke even in filling the places behind the respective Derby winners, will in all probability meet again to decide the vexed question of which is the better of the pair. Ngingo Ngingo at Wellington proved himself a good one by winning well at two miles, and it will be fox' this success that lie is asked to concede Royal Silk 24 yards. The latter is a solid pacer, and it is quite likely that having gone into C. Donald’s stable, the son of Silk Thread will have made further improvement. Then John Jinks, considered by many good judges the “daddy” of the three-year-olds, comes in on the 60yds. mark, and he will be well tested to concede o, start to Ngingo Ngingo and Royal Silk. On the handicap, Royal Silk j looks to have the best prospects.
