THE TRY-ON
One would think that with the first appearance in the far north of the totalisator, the good folk at the top of the Dominion would be a bit diffident of the machine, so far as trusting it with money was concerned. Of the great crowd present probably 25 per cent, simply ignored the presence of the totalisator. and perhaps several did not even know there was such a thing on the course. But there was at least one disciple of “Get-Rich - QuickWallingford” among the spectators, who, if he did not vis-it the front of the machine, had no scruples about making a trip to the pay-out clerks. This dusky and husky native handed in three ten-shilling tickets for payment after the third race, but it did not take a moment for the clerk to see that they were rather out of date. In short, the bits of pasteboard were for a race at a meeting of the Auckland Trots some time ago. so the expectant and innocent (?) speculator was sent about his business.
