TO SPLIT LABOUR?
NEW PARTY IN SOUTH MR. W. J. JORDAN’S REPLY “It is only another party being formed in an endeavour to split the Labour Party.” This was the reply given by Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., today to a Christchurch mssag© which states that another political party is being formed there. The message from Christchurch states that a new party, to be known as the Independent Labour Party (Incorporated) and the New Zealand Women’s Moderate Political Party has been formed with headquarters at Christchurch. A strong committee of both sexes ha,s been organised and the personnel will be advised shortly. Those interested declare that the policy which is being decided on will satisfy all classes of the community. “I know nothing at all about the formation of a new political party," said Mr. Jordan when the contents of the messages were referred to him. “Arising out of the present political situation you may be sure that all sorts of parties will be formed. .'However, the Labour Party will stand as firm as it always did. “United Parties may come and United Parties may go—all sorts of parties may be formed; but they will just amount to the same old thing. We have had Conservative parties called Reform and Conservative, 1 parties called United, and I expect that now the Labour Party is making such headway all sorts of parties will be formed in an endeavour to split it and to fool the public again. “If any move had ben made in the Labour ranks surely the first to hear about it would be the representatives in Parliament. If there is; such a party as is mentioned in the message from Christchurch it is being formed without our knowledge. I can only imagine that it is being done to fight the Labour Party in the House and out of it. “In my opinion the New Zealand Labour Party is on the eve of a forward movement. It has a policy and with the endeavour of its members to improve conditions of affairs in New Zealand it is entitled, in my opinion, to make headway and in the near future to be given an opportunity to govern this Dominion."
