PEARS SELLING NOW POTATO RATES IMPROVE The first good lines of dessert pears are. now offering on the City marklt.es at satisfactory rates. Fine weather has been responsible for a slight improvement throughout the sales of all lines and prices are sounder than they have been for several weeks. Supplies are still abundant, however, and plums, peaches and tomatoes are coming forward in extremely large quantities. Island bananas reveal a big increase in rates. A rise has also taken place in Californian oranges, which are dear. Hothouse grapes are slightly cheaper. Lemons continue to sell at good prices. A rise of Is to 4s 6d a bag has taken place for new potatoes, which have been at glut rates, unprofitable for growers, for some time past. Some marketers predict a firmer market.
